How many transactions per second is a lot?

Is there generally accepted thresholds for how many transactions per second is a lot? Is 100 TPS much? Is 1000 TPS much? And does the software/service processing affect the quantities for a high TPS?

I would think it depends largely on what the transaction involves? Atomically incrementing a counter in a local database is much, much simpler than executing a credit card purchase with currency conversion.
