Why are emoji banned on HN?


It seems that emoji (and possibly other Unicode text) will be automatically removed from submission and comment text.

Is there a reason for this?

In addition to what gtirloni said ..... Dan G (hn@ycombinator.com) is a reasonable fellow that is always happy to answer these eternal 'Why doesn't HN do xyz' type questions.

I would suggest that going that route is better than polluting the HN submission queue with these and similar ‘Eternal September’ ask HN type postings.

Karma be damned, It needed to be said.
