What opened your eyes to a subject


A quick example, then a general explanation.

In a recent interview, I came into contact with the analysis of genetics and have found myself fascinated by the data and systems involved. After a single bio 101 class in college, I had a tiny interest, but this turns it into something like a fascination.

I've often hear people talk about so-and-so, or this-and-that being the reason they got into subject x.

What is your story? Particularly the questions below.

Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb lecture on Oumuamua, Space Archeology and taking aliens seriously. His point was that a single communique with intelligent extraterrestrial life could shed more light on the origins of the cosmos and our purpose within it than millenia of human inquiry ;)

websockets

i didn't think of it so much until i saw i could use it at work but everyone told me there are too many scalability issues

then i had to build a live chat for a personal project and implemented it using websockets with action cable (rails) and it works really well

now i'm reading everything i can about websockets, especially how to scale them
