Best DIY home security system?

I am sick of relying on my isp&rsquo;s home security package with poor hardware and questionable service.How can you do your own security system and still have the ability to notify a security service during alerts?

I previously researched this quite a bit, and all signs pointed to Simplisafe. The Wirecutter[1^] and many other review sources agree.
(I have yet to make this purchase so I can't speak from experience.)
