How to start collecting fossils and meteorites?

I am looking to engage in an outdoor hobby. How easy/hard is it start hunting fossils & meteorites?Any recommended resources to start other? Some advice is also very welcome.

Don't disturb fossils on public (or native tribal) labs.
If you find something noteworthy, document it and its GPS coordinates and notify rangers / tribal police or whatever group has jurisdiction (sometimes University groups).
Poaching fossils is a horrible crime against science and the public good.
