How to run an in-company architecture workshop/meetup?

Hi HN,

One day I expressed to my employer that I want to systematize and expand my knowledge on software architecture, and somehow the conversation ended with me committing to start architecture meetups at work. I've never really organized any in-company event, much less one on architecture, so I have questions :).

Anyone here participated in such event? Perhaps organized one? Does it help people grow their knowledge? Could you share some helpful tips?

I've been thinking about the form of the meetings (they'll be remote, because of COVID) and material to cover. One idea is sort of a "reading club", going over a chapter from AoSA books[0], or picking a topic from Microsoft's Patterns & Practices[1], and trying to connect it to some of the projects we're building.

Do you think (or know from experience) if this form works? Or are there better alternatives?

Thanks in advance for any insight you can give!

[0] - http://aosabook.org/en/index.html - they're broad, interesting, and importantly, free and online, so nobody would have to procure anything.

[1] - https://github.com/mspnp/ - I discovered it only recently, so I'm not yet sure how useful it would be.

I've heard of "Architectural katas". Never done any of them, but sound interesting as an exercise.
