How do you improve diversity and inclusion?

I was asked this during one of three interviews with a large fast food company some time ago. The interview was for a software engineer 2 position.

I had no idea how to answer it. I stubbled through as best I could but I feel my pitiful answer contributed to not getting the job.

I do what I can to include others. There's been times someone outside my normal circle has offered great insight so I'm all for including whoever.

Beyond that what I can do?
