Why are webrings not a thing anymore?

Question

Considering how much SEO spam ends up in the Google search results, it'd be great if we had webrings to use and forgo finding things through google.

https://tinyads.io/ (HN discussion 2 days ago https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=26215378) reminded me a bit of webrings: everybody allows a banner and in exchange their website is linked from other websites.
