What do you wish the tech industry was more like?

Many of us got into this industry initially wide eyed about the potential of technology. The ad industry had other ideas (i.e. surveillance capitals). Now the tech industry is full of startups looking to capture user data and sell it to other parties. If you could imagine the tech industry as how you would like it to be, what would it look like?

I wish ad tech wasn't a thing, I wish we hadn't produced so many winner takes all monopolies. I wish the early promise of the web had been more fully realised I guess. I think the kind of idea Tim Berners Lee is promulgating with Solid is the kind of the thing I'd like to see take off. Who knows if the horse has bolted, I guess we shall see....

Im not depressed about it as such, I work in tech and I try to fight the good fight and work on projects I believe will actually help society. I also remind myself that no ideal is ever reachable and everything ends up reflecting its situation ie the Web reflects all aspects of human nature and also the socio economic system of the cultures it is embedded in. Like in politics, we can't realise ultimate ideals but we can muster all our strength to make incremental progress towards them.

More federated, small time operations. While big company bundling can make a lot of things easy it's stifling innovation and freedom of movement between providers.

A chocolate cake.

Or a worm hole time machine.

One of those.
