The Most Fruitful Experiment of XX Century?

In your opinion, what scientific experiment made any day from 1901 to 2000 has the most influence for everybody? Any experiment you consider as cool or great or mind-changing? Or maybe do you have your favorite experiment, wide-known in your field but little-known by others.

The P-N-P silicon sandwich experiments that led to the transistor. (That's on the influential = beneficial side.)

On the influential-but-has-huge-negatives, the nuclear fission chain reaction experiments.

Not sure if it counts as a "scientific experiment," but Roger Bannister's breaking of the four minute mile barrier seems to have been extremely fruitful. Not just for running, but for the concept of achievement in general; i.e. that when someone breaks a barrier, it becomes easier for others to follow.
