Room for a Lawyer at Your Company?


Hi there! I'm a burned-out attorney that wants to return to the world of tech. I was a systems administrator about 20 years ago and have maintained an interest and realized, during this stressful time, that I want to find a way to merge my career with my interest.

I'm not specifically asking if there is an opening at your company, more like ... do you see a place where having a lawyer would be beneficial? Any niches that you don't see filled?

Mostly, I'm in the brainstorming-and-dreaming phase and I was hoping there might be some hive mind insight.

I too am a lawyer/former sysadmin that has been searching for similar and ... theres not much. The problem as I see it: 1) your breadth of skills really applies best in small business as a bigger business will compartmentalize you (either lawyer or sysadmin); 2) your price tag is going to be problematic for small businesses.

I have channeled my effort into executive level positions in smaller companies that are targets of Private Equity. Previously GC/COO at 50 person company, now CIO AT 250 person company. I literally did everything at the 50 person company and, while stressful, it was fantastic. The 250 person company has compartmentalized me to the point that I still have to send my contracts to our lawyer for review.

And I’m still on 3+ hour long conference calls with no end in sight.

Definitely, we've hired a general counsel after Series B funding when scaling the team rapidly. Frankly i wasn't sure if we need them at the time, i didn't even know what GC are supposed to do ;). But it turned out to be one of the best hires we've made. He's been great asset on all things legal and compliance but also very business focused and contributed on a lot of non legal related projects.

Having a good lawyer around is always useful in my view.
