What is the oldest computer you own and use to this day?


Desktop Computer Specs (Built 2011; almost 10-years old)

Using this box for day to day tasks, including programing.

How old and what kind is your box and what do you use it for? Also, how often do you upgrade?

I have an HP-Agilent J2300D, probably around the same age as myself. It runs some Win98 embedded edition and is used for network and telecom line analysis and has all sorts of niche features and interfaces like t1/e1, V.35, RS-449. It would probably cost me 10x what I paid for this device to get similar interfaces for a modern PC. I do use it and the software it came with for some proven to I work on and the other day, used XMODEM and a null modem cable to transfer some files to my main PC. Really neat device, sadly most of the ports aren’t visible to the OS.

It doesn’t have a trackpad which is mildly annoying. Luckily I have some serial mice sitting around, if I’m not using the PC-serial port for something else. I’ve heard of people replacing the hard drive with an SSD, which I may look into as well.

I have some older computers (and some peripherals even older) but I don’t really use them outside one off projects.

Mid-2012 Retina MBP, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 2.3Ghz Quadcore i7. I just ordered a new 500GB SSD for it and need to get some new rubber feet. Software development, mail, browsing.

I also have a SFF desktop (similar specs) from about 2015 that I upgraded the GPU and storage in recently.

Lastly, we're about to resurrect my wifes 2008 (2.1Ghz Core2Duo) white Macbook with by upgrading to 4GB RAM and a new 250GB SSD that will sport a fresh Solus-Mate install when the parts get here. She'll use it for browsing mostly.

2013 MacBook Air, 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD, stock. We use it for “normal stuff”, but about a year ago I used it for web dev work for about a month (no docker). It worked fine for that other than the day I decided to try out nixos I was also remote pair programming, so screen share, video call, and web dev work.
