I've built getinsights.io, a full-suite privacy-focused analytics platform. We built it because we wanted to use it and it didn't exist yet - other privacy analytics platforms didn't support tracking of events, which was essential for us as we build web apps. Being our first customers helped a lot with validation, although we were really only satisfied once the first paying customer registered.
In my case with Slidepage - "Story-style webpage builder" direct sales of landing pages in this format through my social media followers worked best.
