Do you ask interviewers what laptop+OS you get?
When you interview for a developer role, do you ask what laptop and what OS you get to run? If your code is deployed only on Linux, is a Windows laptop acceptable? What do you say to people who say 'ssh into a server and do your work if you need Linux' or 'run a VM'?
Yes, later on in the process. I’m not too concerned about specifics, but I’m looking for whether a company values developer productivity. There are many good answers to this, from “use what works for you, here’s a budget”, through to “we use this very specific set of tools but have put loads of time into making them work well”. The bad answers are usually things like “IT sends you a laptop”.
Yes, I ask about what the developer environment looks like hardware/software wise and I also ask about workflow processes. In my experience it is well received because it shows them how familiar you are with DevOps.
