What are your favorite roguelike games?

I've enjoyed playing roguelike games in the childhood some 20 years ago but haven't played them lately to know much of recent ones but what are your favorite roguelike games in the past 20 years?

Happy to see many comments about Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup. Start here: http://ultraviolent4.com/guide.html - Play or spectate a game here: https://crawl.develz.org/play.htm

Mine are of course DCSS, Cataclysm: DDA, FTL, DoomRL.

If we're including roguelites: Risk of Rain 2, Slay the Spire, Dead Cells, Enter the Gungeon, Binding of Isaac.

Not a fan of: Caves of Qud, Spelunky, Nethack.

Cataclysm DDA is probably my favourite, but I don't like playing more than a single character at a time, and when I get too far into the endgame, I get bored with it, I usually just kill my character in some ludicrous/stupid way.

That's usually when I play Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup. I think the recent versions are all garbage (I guess there's some pitfalls to democratized game-development), I play strictly version 23.0.

Between these two games, all my of roguelike itches are scratched. I'd say CDDA is sort of like single-player only Dwarf Fortress, and DCSS is Rogue/Angband distilled.

FTL is an INCREDIBLE game, but I've given it up cause it's proprietary software.

I also played some Tales of Maj'Eyal, but imo it's too combat focused for what RP elements are in it.

I've beaten all of these games, and DCSS around 20 times.

I recommend them all thoroughly.

Honorable Mentions: 1) Shattered PD for mobile 2) Slay the Spire

I can't believe nobody said Rogue Legacy yet. This game is amazing and they are producing Rogue Legacy 2 right now.

It gets even better once you realize there are speedrunners who are able to beat the game in 5 minutes. Watch and try to copy them lol.

I also remember enjoying that Roguelike game that is a sequel to Final Fantasy X-2. I know it's not FF X-3, the name is something else, but I can't google it now.

I just picked up Hades on steam and am really enjoying it.

If you’re a fan of twin stick shooters and gratuitous yet quirky violence, I suggest Streets of Rogue. Maps are random and procedurally generated and items and progress are lost when you die, but you get to keep anything you unlocked.

Depending on your definition, Jupiter Hell is a good traditional roguelike. Dwarf Fortress is also often considered one though the gameplay is quite different from most roguelikes.

Binding of Isaac: Rebirth. Pretty much the only video game I've played a lot of (200+ hours at this point) since I started working 15 years ago.
