Legal aspects of cloning a board game?

Hello there,

Are there any legal aspects that need to be heeded when cloning a board game in open source? For example, Gnome's four-in-a-row is a clone of connect four, was changing the name enough to avoid legal issues? Same thing with tetris and others.

I'm not looking for legal advice, just wanted to know if anybody had experience in this.
