based on one reply (very gratefully received), it is not ok to clone, reverse engineer, copyrighted software, then resell it (I've seen as much written into music sound libraries). But a grey area where other copyrighted material is cloned and re-sold.

This is a fascinatingly dark topic. I did not know a whole generation and more of people resented paying for certain items so strongly, especially those items that can be taken in ways that no one sees. This is not physically walking into a store and walking out with what you want, it's like being invisible and taking what you want, from wherever you can take. I can't help but think that if the invisibility were to be removed it wouldn't happen so freely. Moreover, at the same time, not just take, but ascertain some kind of 'right' to ignore ownership - copyright appears to exist for some things and not others, and apparently at the individuals discretion.
