When a company is acquihired, what stops employees immediately leaving?
It occurred to me today while browsing HN — if a company is acquihired, is there typically anything in place that stops the employees leaving either before or after the acquisition?
I could envision a company being acquired for the people, but then people leave and the purchasing company is left paying a large sum for far fewer employees than they anticipated.
It's on the acquiring company to make it worthwhile for the acquihired employees to stick around, or they generally do leave.
A vesting schedule on options or RSUs. Sometimes it’s a new grant and amount based on their new position, other times the amount is roughly equivalent to what they previously had.
Retention packages from the acquiring party get pretty insane to keep key employees on board.
