Hosting your own Facebook-like service

Question

Is anyone hosting their own server that largely provides the same basic functionality as Facebook (status updates, pictures, etc) but on your own server? I would like to build a service for my extended family that handles this basic everyday flow in a way that is familiar for Facebook users but otherwise completely private. Is there any open source software that is trying to achieve this?

Try Friendica. Same functionality as Facebook, but open, like Mastodon. Mastodon : Twitter. Friendica : Facebook.
