Would You Trust Facebook Portal? Alternatives?

I'm 40, and on my wife's AND my side of family we're the only kids with children. Our parents only grandkids. They're young too and tons of fun! (2 and 1).

We live close to wife's family, but her sister is in Arizona. My family is in Ohio (I'm in Utah). I think portal's would be fun, but wary of privacy w/ FB.

I'm curious, do you think portal will be listening 'always'? What does it 'phone home with'. Will FB employees be screening things?

I'm not 'currently' planning a terrorist attack, but if I jokingly said I were into the microphone would the NSA be knocking on my door within the hour?

Are there any alternatives to basically get the same effect as portal but the DIY way and using OSS tools for a backend?
